FAQ
Why does it say my browser is unsupported?
AVIF encoding is currently offered by Chromium browsers (Chrome 85+, Edge); some Firefox/Safari versions cannot encode. Switch to Chrome when you see the notice.
Is the AVIF quality scale the same as WebP?
No. AVIF looks near-lossless in the 50–70 range, more forgiving than the 80–90 typical of WebP/JPEG.
Can every website display AVIF?
All modern browsers do (~93% and rising). Keep a WebP fallback for older devices if needed.
About this WebP to AVIF
AVIF is the next-generation image format built on the AV1 codec: about 20% smaller than WebP at equal quality, with 10-bit color depth and better shadow rendition. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4+ all display it. If your audience uses modern devices, upgrading image assets from WebP to AVIF saves further bandwidth. AVIF encoding relies on browser capability — use a recent Chrome or Edge.
